Q1. What is the eligibility criteria?
Ans. The eligibility criteria is as follows:
- Candidates who have completed their II PUC / 12th Standard or equivalent in 2010 and those who are expecting to complete it in 2013 are eligible to apply.
- The candidates must have studied Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as main subjects during their PUC / 12th Standard.
- Candidates who have studied Biology, Statistics, Electronics, Computer Science, etc., should also have taken Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
- The candidates should have a first class or 60% or an equivalent grade (relaxed to pass class for SC/ST candidates).
Q2. What is the criteria for reservation of seats?
Ans. The reservation of seats is as follows:
- Open for all states
- Total number of seats - 110 to 120 seats
Reservation for SC/ST/OBC/Physically-Handicapped (PH) and Kashmiri-Migrant (KM) candidates: As per Government of India regulations.

Q7. What programs are offered by IISC?
Ans. Following programs are offered under IISC:
- BS in Biology
- BS in Physics
- BS in Mathematics
- BS in Materials
- BS in Environmental Science
- BS in Chemistry.
Q8. What is the selection procedure for BS program?
Ans. Based on the merit lists of one of the following national examinations:
- KVPY-SA-2009 (selected as fellows),
- KVPY-SB (appeared in 2010),
- KVPY-SX/SB+2 (appeared in 2010),
- IIT-JEE (appearing in 2013),
- AIEEE (appearing in 2013), and
- AIPMT (appearing in 2013).
Q9. What is the application procedure?
Ans. An application form may be obtained by either of the following two methods. You have to apply either through the off-line mode or the online mode but not both.
- Off-line application - Send your request for an application form with two address slips, with your mailing address clearly written (preferably stickers), and a Demand Draft for Rs. 600/- for GN/OBC/KM candidates (Rs.300/- for SC/ST/PH categories, along with a copy of an appropriate certificate) to the Deputy Registrar (Academic), Admissions Unit, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore 560 012. The DD has to be drawn in favour of "The Registrar, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore".
- Online application - Online application may be prepared and submitted by accessing the IISc website www.iisc.ernet.in/ug on or after 01.01.2013. The online application fee is Rs. 400/- for GN/OBC/KM candidates and Rs. 200/- for SC/ST/PH categories. After submitting the online application, a printed copy of the filled online application along with a Demand Draft for the required amount must be sent to the Institute.
Q10. What is the submission procedure?
Ans. Submission of Aplication Forms
- Online applications must be submitted on or before 25.03.2013.
- Completed Off-line application form and online application form (printed copy) should reach the Deputy Registrar (Academic), Admissions Unit, IISc, Bangalore-560012 on or before 31.03.2013.
- Use a blue/black ink ballpoint pen to fill in the application form.
- Documents to be sent in the envelope provided:
- Filled Basic Data Sheet.
- Filled Application form
- Copy of SC/ST/OBC/PH/KM certificate, if applicable.
Q11. Will I be reimbursed for the travelling expenses?
Ans. Candidates who join the Institute are eligible for reimbursement of Second-Class Railway / Bus fare by the shortest route from the place of residence to the Institute. This is as follows:
- for attending the counselling (both ways)
- for joining the Institute (one way)
- A duly filled-in TA form with journey tickets should be submitted to the Admissions Unit within 15 days of joining the Institute. Beyond this period, no claim will be accepted.
Q12. Is there any scholarship programme?
Ans. Depending on their performance in national examinations such as KVPY, IITJEE, AIEEE, and AIPMT, students will be able to avail themselves of the standard fellowships offered by agencies such as KVPY and DST-INSPIRE.
Q13. What is the criteria for reservation of seats for physically handicapped students?
Ans. 3% seats are reserved for physically handicapped candidates, as specified by the Government of India. Candidates who have at least 40% permanent physical impairment in relation to a body part/system/extremity/extremities/whole body, etc., will be given the benefit.
The candidates in this category are required to be certified by a Medical Board at IISc. The Medical Board will decide the following:
- Whether the candidate qualifies for the benefits under this category
- If the disability is likely to interfere with his/her studies.
