Two new medical colleges for Delhi, enhanced intake for MBBS, PG

Apart from Technical University for Women the Delhi government has announced many other major initiatives in the field of education and other areas. These include two new medical colleges in Dwarka and Rohini, increase in intake capacity of MAMC for MBBS and PG courses, creation of 14,000 teaching and other posts in education department and others.

The five government medical colleges in Delhi - All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Vardhaman Mahavir Medical College (Safdarjung), University College of Medical Sciences, MAMC, Lady Hardinge - put together offer around 800 MBBS seats to close to around 2 lakh aspirants every year.

The increase of 20 undergraduate medical seats from 180 to 200 and for Post Graduate courses increase from 90 to 161 seats is proposed in the annual Delhi budget for MAMC.

"Infrastructure-wise private colleges are generally good, but when it comes to arranging an experienced faculty and developing competent curriculum, they are far behind," said Dr Debjyoti Karmakar, senior resident doctor, department of gynaecology, AIIMS.

Constructing more medical colleges is the only way to meet the shortfall. "The news of additional seats is assuring for parents, as they are more anxious to see their child get to a good medical college," said Dr Karmakar.
