Merchandisation of Medical Education

Expressing concern over the ‘merchandisation’ of medical education, the Delhi high court, on Thursday, slammed the Medical Council of India (MCI) for not doing enough to ensure that more colleges also resulted in improved health care in the country. The court warned that in the midst of

unbridled mushrooming of medical colleges, the quality of teaching faculty, infrastructure etc was being ignored.

The court issued a slew of directions to the MCI, while allowing the Sharda University and two other colleges to increase the intake of MBBS students from 100 to150, which was not being allowed by the MCI.

“It is time for the MCI to reinvigorate the system to stop unequal growth of mediocre colleges aimed at commercialisation of medical education,” said  said Justice Kailash Gambhir.
