The Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) is an institute at Ranchi University which is situated in Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand State of India. The school is an autonomous body established under an act of Jharkhand Assembly,is one of the most premiere medical college not only of the state but also of the country.
The institute was established in 1960 and originally called Rajendra Medical College Hospital after Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India. The medical college hospital came into existence in February 1965.
Dr N.L. Mitra was the first principal of the college. He was also Professor and Head of the Department of Anatomy. Dr. K.P.Shrivastav was the first director of the institute after it was renamed. Dr N N Agrawal is the current director of the institute. Currently RIMS is in news for its upgradation. The institute provides free medical service to the patients along with many medicines. Developments in the field of surgery is evolving and taking the form of minimal access cosmetically sound (MACS) surgery. The intake every year is 90 students for the ug course.The college provides pg education in every department.The neurosurgery department is one of the best in asia,it gives McH degree. The college is undergoing tremendous developments.the government of India has decided to convert RIMS into regional AIIMS,under the education act.All over India 7 regional AIIMS is to be established.
The college has 1500 beded multispeciality hospital with very advanced diagnostic tools. There are upcoming centres under construction like the oncology centre with the latest radiation machinery,a 150 seated dental college is about to function from the 2011 session,a cardio-thoracic surgery centre and a nephro-urology centre.All with the latest equipment. The college also has a 20 beded trauma centre,the first of its kind in eastern India. The director of RIMS is Dr.A.K.Mahto and dean is Dr.s.s.chowdhary.
he Campus is located on GT Road at Kalyanpur, about 16 km west of Kanpur city, on 1055 acres of land offered by the Government of UP. It is a residential campus offering accomodation to about 350 faculty members, about 700 support staff members, and about 4000 students. The campus has all the amenities for developing the personal, social and academic skills of the community.
