Stanley Medical College is one of the oldest medical colleges in India, as it was started way back in 1938. Located in Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, the medical college is a government-run institution. It is attached to various hospitals in the state, which includes a 200-year old hospital, Government Stanley Hospital with the capacity of 1280 beds, Government Raja Sir Ramasamy Mudaliar Lying-in Hospital, Government Hospital for Thoracic Medicine (Tambaram), and Government Peripheral Hospital (Tondiarpet). The college is approved by the Medical Council of India (MCI), New Delhi.

How To Get Into Stanley Medical College?



Undergraduate:

Competitive entrance examination is conducted for admission in this UG program.



Post Graduate:

The candidates are selected through Tamil Nadu Medical Entrance Test.



Post Graduate Diploma:

The admission is based on the Tamil Nadu Medical Entrance Test for this program.



Doctorate:

Candidates must have appear in the Tamil Nadu Medical Entrance Test for the doctoral programs.





How Many Seats?



Admissions to Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) and post-graduate (MD, MS, other diplomas and higher specialties) are through state (85% seats) and national (15%) entrance examinations. Reservations of seats and reduced tuition are available to underserved communities. Admissions are open only to Indian citizens, and are highly competitive. Admissions to the MBBS program (about 150 seats per year) are based on a weighted aggregate of the entrance exam and high-school final exam scores.



About 1 in 40 applicants are accepted to the MBBS program statewide (about 1500 seats in 15 medical colleges), and only the top-rankers among those accepted to the MBBS program statewide are admitted to Stanley Medical College bringing the effective admission rate to less than 1 in 200. Several seats in post-graduate programs are reserved for physicians in Government service.
