SDM Educational Society Started in the year 1966, by Late D. Rathnavarma Heggade, the SDM Educational Society came into existence with the prime objective of creating educational institutions, unique in their ability to put education on a higher plane. Under the dynamic leadership of the present president, Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade, the Society has created educational models that blend modernity with traditional values. Today, the SDM Educational Society has under its umbrella over 30 educational institutions that impart education from primary schooling to the upper reaches of professional education and even vocational training. The Vision Leader The Dharmadhikari of Dharmasthala, Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade is a multi-faceted personality who combines in him many roles. Being the head of a religious institution that draws millions, he is the dispenser of justice whose word is law. As the president of the Society, he is the guiding spirit and driving force behind the institution. His vision of an educational model that blends the best of tradition and modernity has proved to be the most appropriate one for our culture and times.

SDM College of Medical Sciences & Hospital Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara College of Medical Sciences is the first modern medicine Medical College established under the aegis of the SDM Educational Society. Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade has many maiden ventures to his credit, which have become legendary achievements under his gamut of social reforms. His visionary conceptualisation of an ideal Medical College has taken shape at Dharwad. The first batch of one hundred students commenced their I MBBS course in September 2004. Under the stewardship of Medical Director Dr.Niranjan Kumar and Dean Dr. Y. S. Rai, the students have been cared for in an ideal atmosphere.
