Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS), Bellary was established in the year 1961, Formerly known as Bellary Medical College, the institute is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences and it is recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI), New Delhi. The medical institute is also attached to a hospital, which has the capacity of 680 beds with many modern medical facilities. Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences conducts various courses in the field of medical sciences, at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The institute enrolls as many as 100 students every year for the course of MBBS. It offers several facilities to its students for their all round development.
Bellary was earlier part of Madras presidency and it enjoyed the status of Divisional Head Quarters with all Divisional Offices located in Bellary. A big contingent of British army was stationed here and it was on the air map of India much than Bangalore.
In fact the inaugural flight from Karachi to Madras carrying JRD TATA was given a warm welcome when the plane landed in Bellary in 1923.
Duke of Wellington who become Lord Nelson also had a short stint in Bellary as an Army Officer, before he went to England. Sir Thomas Monroe who became Governor of Madras started his career as Collector of Bellary. Justice Mack who became Chief Justice of Madras High Court, served as District Judge of Bellary for more than 3 years. Of course Bellary attained pinnacle of its glory during the reign of Krishnadevaraya, when Hampi then capital of vast Vijayanagara Empire, outclassed Rome then considered as seat of world culture and civilization.

After the merger with erstwhile Mysore state in 1953, all the Divisional Offices were shifted to other places. Although Bellary, Hospet region had the world’s richest Iron and Manganese reserves, no new industries were setup and the steel plant that was supposed to be located in Torangallu was put in cold storage. There were no significant cultural and social activities. Coupled with very bad dirty roads, acute water shortage, severe summer, it became virtually a decaying and dying city indeed.
BIRTH OF MEDICAL COLLEGE: In 1958 there were only three Government Medical Colleges located at Bangalore, Mysore and Hubli and there were no private medical colleges in the state .There was no Medical College in the entire Hyderabad – Karnataka and Old Madras regions of the state. There was great demand and pressure on the Government for starting a New Medical College in the state. Sponsoring committees at different places including Gulbarga, Belgaum, Mangalore, Davangere were formed for getting a medical college. At Bellary in 1958,a Sponsoring committee was constituted, comprising of then stalwarts Tekur Subramanyam, then M.P of Bellary,M.M.Patil(Father of Shri.M.P.Prakash), H.Linga Reddy, Y.Mahabaleshwarappa, Allum Karibasappa, V.Nagappa, M.Y.Ghorpade, Abdul Kareem of Royal Talkies, Dr,Y.P.Vittal, Prominent ENT Surgeon amongst the others. Dr.Y.P.Vittal and Mr.M.Y.Ghorpade are happily amidst us and we approach them for help and guidance from time to time .Struggle for getting Medical college attained serious proportions turned violent at times at different places in state. Bellary Bundh was observed in 1960.Sponsoring Committee members made several trips to Bangalore and met concerned Ministers and Chief minister pleading for the location of new medical college at Bellary. Public of Bellary whole heartedly co-operated and contributed generously toward a corpus fund of Rs.10 lakhs for starting Medical college .The Mysore Government appointed a technical committee to study and submit a report for the location of new Medical college in the state and the committee submitted a report favouring Bellary as the ideal site for location of New Medical College.
Shri. B.D.Jatti then the Chief Minister accepted this verdict and the state cabinet ratified and gave its approval for locating the Medical college at Bellary. However there were hurdles in getting clearance from Central Government and D.P.Karmarkar then the Union Health Minister and close friend of Tekur Subramanyam was instrumental in getting Central Government clearance to include the Medical college in the Third Five Year plan .Finally, on 15 th June, 1961 the Government order (G.O. No. PLM 563 MMC 60, Bangalore Dt.15.6.1961) was issued sanctioning Medical college at Bellary with an annual intake of 75 students.
Medical College is located in the former Allipuram Jai Complex and it is spread over an area of 173 acres of land .British Government established this high security and high profile jail in nineteenth century. Prisoners from Bhor war, two world wars were imprisioned here. Later on prominent National leaders including Rajaji, Kamaraj, E.V.Ramaswamy Naiker, Prakasam, Tekur Subramanyam, V.V.Giri, Sanjeeva Reddy, famous playback singer Ghantasala and others who participated in freedom struggle were lodged in this jail. It is therefore quite appropriate that a freedom memorial complex is located in front of the medical college. This complex consists of Bronze statue of Gandhiji, a scene depicting freedom fighters lodged in the jail and a park. The memorial was inaugurated in the year 1994.
RESURRECTION OF MEDICAL COLLEGE: Medical College received lot of patronage and encouragement from Government and people of Bellary resulting in alround development in sixties and seventies. Perhaps it enjoyed pinnacle of glory from 1975 to 1980 when Dr.R.H.N.Shenoy was the principal. During this period Medical Council of India not only gave recognition to M.B.B.S Course but also permitted to start P.G. Courses in various departments. The decline started in early eighties and the present decade where there were no developmental activities in the campus. Posts in various departments fell vacant and in 1994,50-60% of posts in some departments were vacant as the doctors working in Bangalore and Mysore never reported here on orders of transfer or worked for some time and managed to go back to Bangalore and Mysore .So much so in 1994 MCI withdrew the recognition and after obtaining an undertaking from the state Government permitted admission on risk basis. Government subsequently appointed a committee under the Chairmanship of Dr. Ramanna then DME to suggest ways and means to develop the Medical college. Committee in its report suggested to convert the college into an autonomous institute with separate Director and the Governing Council under the chairmanship of Minister for Medical Education, consequently Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) came into existence in 1996. Dr.Lalitha Mahale, then the principal of KMC and Dr. Tekur Ramanath then HOD of Medicine, Medical college, Bellary took over as director and principal of VIMS respectively in the month of August 1996.
